The Man
Ludwig I was born in Strasburg, Austria on August 25th, 1786. His wedding to Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in October 1810 was the first ever Oktoberfest. He was King of Bavaria from 1825 until the revolutions in the German states in 1848. His abdication on March 20, 1848 was in part caused by the scandals with his mistresses, the most famous being Lola Montez.
The Arts
Ludwig I was a builder of many neoclassical buildings, especially in Munich. One of his most well known patronages was the Schoenheitengalerie (Gallerie of Beauties), painted by Joseph Stieler. Below are two examples of the Beauties.
Other buildings ordered by Ludwig I include the Walhalla temple on the Danube river and the Glyptothek museum in Munich. He was a fanatic art collector. This devotion to the arts resulted in his unofficial title of "The Builder of Museums" by future generations of Bavarians when discussing the various Ludwings.
